Can I use LABELVIEW to scan a bar code and use this information to generate another bar code?
This can be done by way of COMMWATCH. CommWatch comes standard with LABELVIEW Gold and will allow you to link to weigh scales, bar code scanners or other devices. This will allow the introduction of data streams from pre-defined sources to generate new bar codes instantly and put the required data into labels without any operator intervention. CommWatch can also be used a database "field", allowing you to fill an entire label based on this scanned field.

To use Commwatch:

  • Select Options, Configuration, and CommWatch from the main menu.

  • Configure "CommWatch" to the specific device you intend to use by clicking "New". Choose your device from the supplied list or if the device is unlisted, choose a generic device. NOTE: The Settings for COM options are directed towards the device that you intend to use and NOT the printer you are going to use. Use the "test" function to ensure your data streams are correct.

  • Add a Text or Barcode field to the label.

  • Choose "CommWatch" as the data source. In the Prompt field you may type what question the operator will see, such as " Enter Weight ". This means that the data you input from the Com port will display in this field at print time. You are now ready to print labels.

  • If you wish to link this field to another field on your label, select options and change the field name to something descriptive like " weight " and click OK until you are back at your label.

  • Create another text box; choose " Linked " as the Data Source.

  • To manipulate our source data from CommWatch, choose one of the options available from the drop down menu at the end of the linked field box. In this example, we are going to multiply our source data by .97. So we must select MULT() from the list.

  • Inside the brackets we type our descriptive name from step 5, our multiplier and the number of decimals. i.e. MULT(weight,.97,2)

  • Select OK and you are ready to print.
